Visiting Student Application

The Center for the Economics of Human Development (CEHD) at the University of Chicago welcomes students from other institutions pursuing a graduate level degree or Ph.D. in Economics or a related field as short-term visitors.

This includes students whose research efforts focuses on developing rigorous formal models of the life cycles of individuals and families, including models of family formation and dissolution, those making extensive and creative empirical explorations of the life cycle, and students conducting ethnographic studies of human development.

Time spent at CEHD will be mutually beneficial. Visiting students will be encouraged to sharpen their analytical skills through direct engagement with CEHD researchers, affiliates, and the university on whole. Through their participation in research, conferences, workshops, and lectures, the visiting student will contribute to an exchange of ideas that will enrich CEHD’s research.

CEHD is able to offer visa sponsorship (if necessary), office space, and access to the university’s resources, including its libraries. Per University of Chicago policy, visiting students must meet minimum financial support thresholds. Limited stipend support may be available. Although the potential visiting student may propose a visiting period, duration and timing of the visit is at the discretion of CEHD leadership.

Requirements

  • A visiting student must be pursuing a Ph.D. or other advanced graduate degree and in the thesis writing stage. All coursework must be completed.
  • Interest in advancing understanding of human development across the life cycle, including early childhood and adolescence.
  • Interest in the impacts of early life conditioning on inequality, intergenerational mobility, employment, health and crime.
  • Experience conducting empirical research.
  • A visiting student must demonstrate the ability to meet the university’s funding thresholds for the quarter(s) they would like to visit (up to four consecutive quarters).
  • A visiting student must write a research statement detailing the research they will perform, how it aligns with the work of CEHD, and why it is necessary to work at University of Chicago and CEHD.
