CEHD Research Cited in President Biden’s American Families Plan
On April 28, President Biden announced his American Families Plan, a sweeping investment in our nation’s families, which will expand access to free education, create a national comprehensive paid family and medical leave, and will extend tax cuts for families with children and lower- and middle-income workers. In the fact sheet that details the plan, early childhood research by Professor Heckman, CEHD alum Jorge Luis García, and co-authors Duncan Ermini Leaf and María José Prados was cited. The citation comes from a cost-benefit analysis of the Carolina Abecedarian Project and the Carolina Approach to Responsive Education, which showed that “every dollar invested in a high-quality, birth to five program for the most economically disadvantaged children resulted in $7.30 in benefits as children grew up healthier, were more likely to graduate high school and college, were less likely to be involved in crime, and earned more as adults.” You can find more information on the research here, and read the full fact sheet on the American Families Plan here.
